Definition

In RDA cataloging, use field 250 for musical presentation statements, which are now considered to be edition statements. Prefer the use of field 250 for all new cataloging. See the score cataloging guidelines in field 250 for additional information.

In AACR2 cataloging, field 254 was used for the musical presentation statement for printed or manuscript music. The statement, transcribed from the item, described the particular format of the edition in hand, which may have differed from the format of another edition of the same work (e.g., a string quartet published as a full score, study score, score and parts, or a set of parts). It was used for statements that indicate the physical presentation of the music (e.g., score and parts, study score, or miniature score). However, statements that indicated an arrangement or edition of a musical work (e.g., vocal score, version with orchestra accompaniment, Klavierauszug) were treated as subsequent statements of responsibility (field 245 subfield ǂc), regardless of whether a name appeared in conjunction with the statement.

Field 254 was not used for sound recordings.
