OhioLINK-OCLC Collection and Circulation Analysis Project

You may or may not be aware of a joint project between OhioLINK and OCLC Research to analyze usage patterns of library materials. The primary goal is to better understand the usage patterns of books in academic libraries: what books are (or are not) being used, how many copies are needed, the ideal size of subject collections, etc. The project combines OhioLINK circulation data and WorldCat bibliographic and holdings data together to perform this analysis.

Upcoming webinar on WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway

In celebration of Open Access Week [October 24-30, 2011], OCLC is hosting a webinar on the WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway. This tool provides libraries with a way to share the metadata of their unique digital content to OCLC’s WorldCat; making your collections are more visible and discoverable by end users who search WorldCat.org, WorldCat Local and WorldCat Local "quick start", as well as Google, Yahoo! and other popular Web sites. User are able to easily click through to local library systems to access the digital item and view it immediately on their screen.

Introduction to mobile apps Webinar

Here's a Webinar sponsored by MLNC that came across our desks recently. It caught our eye because we're all about apps right now with platform activities ramping up. While this particular Webinar sounds like it might be helpful to send your less-technically-inclined colleagues to, you could also plan to attend yourself, just to see what apps someone else thinks are the best.

Building the New York Times Bestsellers application

The last prototype application I built was the New York Times Bestseller application. This application is a riff on one of the potential Platform applications demonstrated at last year's ALA. The "Bestseller App 2.0" allows a library to select a given New York Times Bestseller list and see which items from that list the library doesn't currently own. Then a user can select which of these items should be purchased and how many copies should be purchased. An Amazon cart with these items is then created as is a WMS order.

Building the Amazon Order Application

The first application that I built off of the prototype WMS Acquisiton web service was the Amazon Order application. As I've explained in my basic overview of the Platform prototype application, the purpose of the Amazon application was to take an existing WMS order and send that order to Amazon, creating a shopping cart.

The first thing that the application does is generate a form screen which allows the user to input and existing WMS Acquisitions Purchase Order number.
