Linked Data now in WorldCat Facebook App

The availability of Linked Data in WorldCat.org has everyone here very excited. We had been anxiously awaiting the chance to make use of this new feature in our own applications, and are now beginning to try it out.

Thanks! OCLC is the future.

VIAF gets bigger and better

VIAF, the Virtual International Authority File, keeps on improving. In fact, OCLC Research staff just installed an update to VIAF recently. On 18 Feb 2011, to be exact. As of that update, VIAF now contains:

18.4 million source records
14.5 million VIAF clusters
6.2 million links between source records
2.4 million VIAF clusters built from more than one source record

As part of this update, new data has been added from Spain, France, Germany, Canada, LC, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Swiss National Library and Sweden.

VIAF now includes Corporate Names

For those you who haven't seen Thom Hickey's blog post, VIAF not includes corporate names. Conference names, which strongly overlap corporate names, are included in VIAF's corporate names. The corporate matching is not as mature as personal names, and OCLC will be refining it over the coming months. We know there are errors and would appreciate it if you would report any errors you see to help us improve the matching.
