How WorldCat knowledge base data is used
The WorldCat knowledge base data enables maintenance, discovery, and delivery of library resources in a number of OCLC services. Supported features include:
- Automatic management of WorldCat holdings and delivery of WorldCat MARC records for electronic materials
Libraries that use OCLC WorldShare Metadata Collection Manager automatically manage WorldCat holdings and receive MARC records for WorldCat knowledge base resources with ongoing updates. This provides your users with seamless access to e-books and other electronic and digitized materials via your catalog and other discovery tools.
- OpenURL resolution, A to Z journal list and easy access to electronic resources from search results
The WorldCat knowledge base enables OpenURL linking and an A to Z journal list in the WorldCat Discovery (coming soon) and WorldCat Local services allowing users to quickly connect to articles they need.
If your library's holdings data is in the WorldCat knowledge base, users can also link to electronic content including full-text articles and e-books using "View Now" links found in brief search results.
- Quick and easy sharing of your electronic content
WorldCat Interlibrary Loan and ILLiad subscribers benefit from use of the WorldCat knowledge base with fast and easy delivery of online articles and fewer loan requests for electronic items that your library already owns. Efficient sharing of electronic resources without having to manually locate and retrieve needed items, reduces turnaround time from days to minutes.
- Manage acquisition of electronic resources
Using WorldCat knowledge base data, WorldShare Management Services subscribers can manage the acquisition of electronic resources in one seamless workflow.
- Integrated link resolution in a full-featured license management solution
OpenURL resolution in the OCLC WorldShare License Manager service is powered by data in the WorldCat knowledge base. License Manager goes beyond link resolution to provide a central location for managing the license terms and vendor contact information required for management of electronic resources. It includes a globally-maintained vendor information center and templates for global management of public and shared licensing terms.
