acquisitions role
In WorldCat Selection, acquisitions staff export bibliographic records for selected items from all selectors and all vendors, load the records into the library's Integrated Library System (ILS), and send orders to vendors electronically from within the ILS.

administrator role
In WorldCat Selection, administrators define institution-wide settings. For example, administrators map data from notification records to fields for output in exported bibliographic records, specify fund and location codes, and outline record-distribution criteria.

materials vendor partners
In WorldCat Selection, vendor partners provide notification items for each participating library to OCLC. OCLC staff combine bibliographic data from WorldCat with the vendor data and load the records into Selection for distribution to selectors responsible for the appropriate collection area. For a list of Selection partners, see: www.oclc.org/selection/partners/

N

notification item
In a traditional selection and ordering process, notices about materials available from a vendor, supplied to a library by a vendor. Vendors send a printed slip or electronic notification to the library as determined by a library-defined profile. Selectors review the notifications and decide which items to purchase. Then the library orders selected materials from the vendor.

WorldCat Selection combines this vendor information with bibliographic and holdings data from WorldCat to create notification records. The system provides selectors with a single list of notification records for their collection areas, from all vendors. Selectors review and act on the records from this consolidated list. Selecting a record automatically moves it to acquisitions staff for export, loading to the integrated library system, and ordering.

notification record
In WorldCat Selection, a record that combines vendor notices of new materials with bibliographic and holdings data from WorldCat. Selectors take actions on these records to decide which materials to purchase and automatically notify acquisitions staff to export WorldCat records to the integrated library system and order selected materials. See also notification item.

WorldCat Selection
Launched in December 2006, WorldCat Selection allows selectors of new library materials to view notification records from multiple vendors in one comprehensive system. The service allows acquisitions staff to export WorldCat bibliographic records for selected items and then load the records into the library's integrated library system (ILS) to complete the ordering process. (Based on ITSO CUL, the Integrated Tool for Selection and Ordering at Cornell University Libraries.)
