Why read this?

To learn about changes to OCLC-MARC records, many of which are related to Resource Description and Access (RDA), the proposed successor to AACR2. These changes are based on:

May 2012, unless otherwise noted. Installations of this OCLC-MARC Update may occur in stages, which OCLC will announce via logon Messages of the Day, Connexion News, and the OCLC-CAT listserv.

OCLC strongly recommends not using new capabilities, new fields and subfields, new indicators, new practices, and new codes until OCLC announces that they may be used.

New searching and indexing capabilities: All new searching and indexing capabilities can be used in both Connexion interfaces (client and browser) when announced by OCLC in May 2012.

After installation, all indexing changes will gradually become apparent as WorldCat is re-indexed.

New fields, subfields, and indicators: These may be used in both Connexion interfaces when announced by OCLC in May 2012, with the following exception:

The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) has published the PCC Guidelines for the 264 Field at http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/documents/264-Guidelines.doc. When using field 264, follow these guidelines. Note this comment on rare or special materials:

Name Authority Cooperative (NACO) participants should not implement the changes to field 382 until OCLC announces that implementation and testing by all NACO nodes is complete.

New codes: These may be used in both Connexion interfaces when announced by OCLC in May 2012. New Country Codes have been added to the Connexion client 2.40 Ctry fixed field dropdown.

Database scans

OCLC will convert data to its appropriate new format to the extent that is possible.

For filmstrips and slides, code for the text on the film, the accompanying sound or the accompanying printed script (for works with no sound or, if with sound, no narration). 264 Production, Publication, Distribution, Manufacture, and Copyright Notice (R)

		New field The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) has published the PCC Guidelines for the 264 Field at http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/documents/264-Guidelines.doc. When using field 264, follow these guidelines. Note this comment on rare or special materials: It should be noted that these guidelines do not address the application of the 264 field for materials cataloged under the standards for Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (DCRM) or other standards for specialized materials. The communities working on the application of RDA for specialized materials will need to develop appropriate guidelines for using the 264 field with those materials. Questions or comments about the PCC Guidelines for the 264 Field should be addressed to coop@loc.gov.
Definition		Statement relating to the publication, printing, distribution, issue, release, or production of a work. Information in field 264 is similar to information in field 260. Field 264 is useful for cases where the content standard or institutional policies make a distinction between functions.

		Not applicable/No information provided/Earliest Used when a resource is first cataloged. Information present when value is is not changed (unless incorrect or earlier issues of a serial are later available with differing publishing information). Defined as "No information provided" for monographic works that are complete as first issued.
	2	Intervening Used when the place of production, publication, distribution, manufacture or the name of the producer, publisher, distributor, manufacturer changes. Additional production, publication, distribution, manufacture statements between the earliest and latest may also be recorded with first indicator value 2.
	3	Current/latest Used when the name of the producer, publisher, distributor, manufacturer changes, or when the place of production, publication, distribution, manufacture associated with the earliest statement changes. The current statement may be added with first indicator value 3. Data given in a subsequent statement can be changed to reflect the current information when only the earliest and most current data is needed.

Printing		When printing catalog cards, field 264 prints in the title paragraph. All instances of field 264 print, with the exceptions noted below in Field 264 and fields 260, 261, and 262. Fields and subfields print in order found in record. First and second indicator values do not affect printing. Punctuation If Desc is not blank ( ), u, or c, then a blank-dash-dash-blank is supplied before each occurrence of the field (adding a period first if the preceding data does not end with terminal punctuation). If Desc is anything else, then a blank is provided before each field occurrence. In all cases, a is currently provided between subfields. if subfield ‡c ends with a dash, then four blanks are added to leave room for a manually-added date. 377 Associated Language (R)

Definition		Codes for languages associated with the entity described in the record. Includes the language a person uses when writing for publication, broadcasting, etc., a language a corporate body uses in its communications, a language of a family, or a language in which a work is expressed. RDA Records: Guidelines for using field 377 in relation to field 008/35-37, 041 and 546 in those cases where the bibliographic format is used to represent a work or expression with no manifestation information: 008: Field 008 supports primarily machine indexing of the language of the resource for user tasks to find and select. Always supply 008 for a resource/manifestation or an expression, but do not supply if the record is for a work. 041: Supply field 041 as needed and as applicable in bibliographic records for the manifestation only; do not use if the record is for a work or expression. 546: Use field 546 to record textual information about language in bibliographic records for the manifestation or expression; do not use if the record is for a work. 377: When the resource description is for an expression, field 377 can be supplied even when one 377 field duplicates the language information in the heading ‡l. In an expression description, fields 008 and 546 may also contain language information. Do not use if the record is for a manifestation.
