To learn about changes to OCLC-MARC records, many of which are related to Resource Description and Access (RDA), the proposed successor to AACR2. These changes are based on:
All sections describe changes that may affect local system processing of OCLC-MARC records.
Cataloging and local system or automation staff.
May 2012, unless otherwise noted. Installations of this OCLC-MARC Update may occur in stages, which OCLC will announce via logon Messages of the Day, Connexion News, and the OCLC-CAT listserv.
OCLC strongly recommends not using new capabilities, new fields and subfields, new indicators, new practices, and new codes until OCLC announces that they may be used.
New searching and indexing capabilities: All new searching and indexing capabilities can be used in both Connexion interfaces (client and browser) when announced by OCLC in May 2012.
After installation, all indexing changes will gradually become apparent as WorldCat is re-indexed.
New fields, subfields, and indicators: These may be used in both Connexion interfaces when announced by OCLC in May 2012, with the following exception:
The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) has published the PCC Guidelines for the 264 Field at http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/documents/264-Guidelines.doc. When using field 264, follow these guidelines. Note this comment on rare or special materials:
Questions or comments about the PCC Guidelines for the 264 Field should be addressed to coop@loc.gov.
Name Authority Cooperative (NACO) participants should not implement the changes to field 382 until OCLC announces that implementation and testing by all NACO nodes is complete.
New codes: These may be used in both Connexion interfaces when announced by OCLC in May 2012. New Country Codes have been added to the Connexion client 2.40 Ctry fixed field dropdown.
OCLC will convert data to its appropriate new format to the extent that is possible.

| Field tag | Field description | Add field if not present | Add field if present | Edit if present | Credit for add | Credit for edit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 246 | Varying Form of Title | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 740 | Uncontrolled Related/Analytical Title | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Changed definition | Text below added to definition. The choice of code for 008/06 is made concurrently with a determination of the appropriate dates for 008/07-14. For most records, data is derived from information in fields 260, 264, 362, or from note fields (5xx). | |
| Changed code definition | t | Publication date and copyright date Date of publication/release/production/execution is present in 008/07-10 and a copyright notice date or phonogram copyright notice date is present in 008/11-14. Deposit dates (i.e., those preceded by D.L. (Dépot légal), etc.) may be treated as copyright dates. |
| Changed definition for VIS format | Text below added to definition. For visual materials, coding depends on the type of material. For moving image materials, the language content is defined as the sound track, the accompanying sound, or sign language. For moving image materials with no sound or sign language content or, if with sound, no narration, use zxx (no linguistic content). For filmstrips and slides, code for the text on the film, the accompanying sound or the accompanying printed script (for works with no sound or, if with sound, no narration). For all other still images, including original or historical graphic material and opaque and non-opaque graphic material, and three-dimensional materials, the language content is that associated with the material, i.e., captions or other text associated with the item or collection that are part of the chief source of information. |
| New subfield | ‡0 | Authority Record Control Number or Standard Number (R) Subfield ‡0 contains the system control number of the related authority record, or a standard identifier such as an International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI). The control number or identifier is preceded by the appropriate MARC Organization code (for a related authority record) or the Standard Identifier source code (for a standard identifier scheme), enclosed in parentheses. See MARC Code List for Organizations ( http://www.loc.gov/marc/organizations/orgshome.html) for a listing of organization codes and Standard Identifier Source Codes ( http://www.loc.gov/standards/sourcelist/standard-identifier.html) for code systems for standard identifiers. Subfield ‡0 is repeatable for different control numbers or identifiers. Note: Do not input subfield ‡0 in master records, instead use the control headings function. Local authority identifiers may be entered in subfield ‡0 locally, but should not be added to master records in WorldCat. |
| Changed subfield definition | ‡a | Language code of text/sound track or separate title (R) For moving image resources, subfield ‡a contains the code(s) of spoken or sung languages associated with the item, as well as sign language and any language code(s) of the languages of accompanying sound. For projected still images such as filmstrips and slides, subfield ‡a contains the code(s) of languages associated with the item, as well as any language code(s) of the languages of accompanying printed script or accompanying sound. For all other still images, including original or historical graphic material and opaque and non-opaque graphic material, and for three-dimensional artifacts, subfield ‡a contains the code(s) of languages associated with the material, i.e., captions or other text associated with the item or collection that are part of the chief source of information. When a work is a translation or includes a translation, the code for the language of the translation is recorded in subfield ‡a. The code(s) for the language(s) of the original work are recorded in subfield ‡h. The code(s) for the language(s) of intermediate translations are recorded in subfield ‡k. If an item is the original with an accompanying translation, repetitive subfield ‡a contains the code(s) for the language(s) of the translation and the original(s). The code(s) for the original is also recorded in subfield ‡h. |
| ‡j | Language code of subtitles or captions (R) Language codes for written languages providing access to moving image materials, such as intertitles (silent films), subtitles, or captions (open or closed, intended for users with hearing disabilities). It does not include the languages of the credits, packaging, or accompanying material. If needed, the language of credits is recorded in field 546 (Language Note) and the language of packaging or accompanying material is recorded in 041 subfield ‡g (Language code of accompanying material other than librettos). | |
| Subfield renamed and definition changed | ‡h | Language code of original (R). Formerly, Language code of original and/or intermediate translations of text. Language code(s) for original language. Original language may be recorded regardless of whether the first indicator indicates a translation (i.e. value 1). The language code is for the original language of the primary content of the item and it is not required to use it if the item is not a translation. When indicating the original language of subsidiary materials (e.g. other liner notes, etc.) subfield ‡m is used. |
| New subfields | ‡k | Language code of intermediate translations (R) Language code(s) for an intermediate language between the original and the current translation, where the resource was translated from an intermediate language other than the original. |
| ‡m | Language code of original accompanying materials other than librettos (R) Language code of original language(s) of subsidiary materials other than librettos. The subfield follows the related subfield ‡b or ‡g. | |
| ‡n | Language code of original libretto (R) Language code of original language(s) of the printed text of the vocal/textual content of the work. The subfield follows the related subfield ‡e. | |
| Conversion | Subfields ‡h that follow subfields ‡b or ‡g will be converted to subfields ‡m. Subfields ‡h that follow subfields ‡e will be converted to subfields ‡n. |
| New first indicator value | 7 | Other edition specified in subfield ‡2 The edition is specified in subfield ‡2. |

| New subfield | ‡q | Assigning agency (NR) MARC organization code of the institution that assigned the classification number. Code from MARC Code List for Organizations ( http://www.loc.gov/marc/organizations/orgshome.html). |
| Changed definition | Text below added to definition Information in field 260 is similar to information in field 264. Field 260 is useful for cases where the content standard or institutional policies used do not make a distinction between functions. |
| New field The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) has published the PCC Guidelines for the 264 Field at http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/documents/264-Guidelines.doc. When using field 264, follow these guidelines. Note this comment on rare or special materials: It should be noted that these guidelines do not address the application of the 264 field for materials cataloged under the standards for Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (DCRM) or other standards for specialized materials. The communities working on the application of RDA for specialized materials will need to develop appropriate guidelines for using the 264 field with those materials. Questions or comments about the PCC Guidelines for the 264 Field should be addressed to coop@loc.gov. | ||
