Definition

A call number or classification number assigned by the Library and Archives Canada (LAC) or another Canadian organization excluding numbers from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classification system, the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), and the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC).

When assigning numbers from classification schemes that are excluded from this field, use these fields:

Guidelines

The field may contain a Library of Congress Classification (LCC) number, an LCC-compatible number or a number assigned from some other classification scheme. An LCC-compatible number is a number that has been assigned using the schedules that were specifically developed by LAC for Canadian history (FC, or its precursor F5000) and for Canadian literature (PS8000). Numbers from locally modified or expanded LCC schedules such as KF Modified are not LCC-compatible.

Follow an incomplete class number with an asterisk to indicate that the Cutter number varies from English to French.

Institutions in Canada

Use field 055 to assign call numbers and class numbers from schemes other than NLM, UDC, and DDC. Input those numbers in the field appropriate for the number. This field may contain numbers from LC classification schedules, LCC compatible numbers, or other numbers.

Institutions outside of Canada

Use field 055 when transcribing Canadian cataloging copy.

Multiple call numbers

Certain classification choices are recognized to be local decisions. Multiple call numbers in the same classification scheme in a WorldCat record may be appropriate under certain circumstances. For more information, see 050-099 Introduction to Call Numbers.

The type of number involved, whether it is LCC or an LCC-compatible call/class number, or a call/class number assigned from some other classification scheme. The completeness of the number, and whether the number was assigned by Library and Archives Canada or a Canadian organization other than LAC. The term does not include numbers from locally modified or expanded LCC schedules.
