Definition

Variant forms of the title appearing on different parts of a resource, or a portion of the title proper, or an alternative form of the title when the form differs substantially from the title statement in field 245, that contribute to the further identification or retrieval of the resource.

For items containing several works, but lacking a collective title, field 246 is used only for variant titles related to the title selected as the title proper, usually the first work named in the resource. Titles related to the other works are entered in field 740.

For items containing several works with a collective title, title access points for the individual works are entered in field 740.

For information on punctuation, see the Punctuation section below.

Guidelines

Use the following guidelines:

  • Use a separate field for each variant title
  • Prefer entry of multiple occurrences of field 246 in the following order based on 2nd indicator values: 0, 1, blank, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
  • Omit initial articles in subfield ǂa unless the intent is to file on the initial article
  • Enter identifying phrases only in subfield ǂi rather than in subfield ǂa

Enter field 246 if the title, excluding other title information, normalizes differently than the title proper in field 245. Do not add field 246 if the only difference is the wording of other title information in subfield ǂb. Differences in other title information may be noted in field 500.

1st Indicator

Note/added entry controller. Whether a note and/or title access point is generated from the field.

0

Note, no added entry. Use if the variant title is needed to display as a note, but not as a title access point. Value 0 is used infrequently in field 246. Prefer use of value 1.

1

Note, added entry. Use if the variant title is needed to display as a note and as a title access point. Use primarily for variant titles appearing on the item that are not part of the data recorded in field 245.

2

No note, no added entry. Use if the variant title is not needed to display as a note or a title access point. Value 2 is unlikely to be used in field 246. Prefer use of value 3.

3

No note, added entry. Use if the variant title is not needed to display as a note, but is needed as a title access point. Use primarily for variant titles which already appear in field 245 such as alternative titles, parallel titles, portions of the title proper, etc.

2nd Indicator

Type of title. The type of title recorded in field 246. Use to generate a display constant that precedes titles when notes are generated from this field, e.g., when the 1st indicator value is 1. Display text can be provided in subfield ǂi in cases not handled by 2nd indicator values 2 through 8.

blank character

No type specified. Use for titles not accommodated by other 2nd indicator values. Use with 1st indicator value 1 and subfield ǂi when a specific display is needed.

0

Portion of title. Any portion of the title in field 245, other than parallel titles, for which an access point is needed. Generally, use with 1st indicator value 3.

1

Parallel title. Titles in another language. Use to create an access point for a parallel title in field 245. Use a separate 246 field for each parallel title. Generally, use with 1st indicator value 3.

2

Distinctive title. A special title that appears in addition to the regular title on individual issues of a resource and by which the issue may be known. They are most common on annual reports, yearbooks, or conference proceedings when an issue is dedicated to a particular topic or theme. Do not confuse distinctive titles with individual titles within a series. Use primarily for serials. Enter distinctive titles in field 246 if the individual volume is likely to be known by the special title. Always use subfield ǂf with a distinctive title. When used with 1st indicator value 1, 2nd indicator value 2 can be used to generate the display constant Distinctive title:.

3

Other title. Titles not specified by other 2nd indicator values and not specifically identified using subfield ǂi. Other titles include masthead titles, half titles, binder's titles, colophon titles, and parallel titles not in field 245. Use primarily for serials. When used with 1st indicator value 1, 2nd indicator value 3 can be used to generate the display constant Other title:.

4

Cover title. Titles on the cover as issued by the publisher rather than a result of subsequent rebinding. When used with 1st indicator value 1, 2nd indicator value 4 can be used to generate the display constant Cover title:.

5

Added title page title. Title page not used as the source of the title proper when a resource has two title pages, usually in different languages, with the additional page preceding or following the title page used as the source of the title proper or on an inverted title page at the end of the publication. Use field 246 for the title on the additional title page. When used with 1st indicator value 1, 2nd indicator value 5 can be used to generate the display constant Added title page title:.

6

Caption title. Titles printed at the head of the first page of text or music. When used with 1st indicator value 1, 2nd indicator value 6 can be used to generate the display constant Caption title:.

7

Running title. Titles repeated in the top or bottom margin of each page or every other page in a resource. When used with 1st indicator value 1, 2nd indicator value 7 can be used to generate the display constant Running title:.

8

Spine title. Titles on the spine as issued by the publisher rather than a result of subsequent rebinding. The spine title is often a short or partial form of the full title given on the title page. When used with 1st indicator value 1, 2nd indicator value 8 can be used to generate the display constant Spine title:.
