Definition

Media type reflects the general type of intermediation device required to view, play, run, etc., the content of a resource. Used as an alternative to or in addition to the coded expression of Media type in field 007 subfield ǂa. Field 337 information enables indication of more specific media types and media types from various lists.

Code rare slides, transparencies, stereographs, and other historic graphic materials cataloged under rare and archival descriptive conventions, code subfield ǂa as unmediated and/or subfield ǂb as n to reflect their current use as unmediated artifacts, even if they may have originally been intended for use with a mediating device.

Multiple media types should be recorded in separate occurrences of field 337.

For guidance on describing and encoding the attributes of audio recording carriers, see “Supplement 1” of the Music Library Association’s Supplements to Best Practices for Music Cataloging Using RDA and MARC21.

Subfields

ǂa Media type term

Media type of the work being described. Use terms which correspond to the language of cataloging used in other parts of the description. For more information on parallel language records, see section 2.6, Language of Cataloging. For a list of RDA media type terms, see RDA 3.2 or RDA Media Type.

337     video ǂb v ǂ2 rdamedia
ǂb Media type code

Code representing the media type of the work being described. For codes identifying RDA media types (i.e., subfield ǂ2 is coded rdamedia), see Term and Code List for RDA Media Types.

337     computer ǂb c ǂ2 rdamedia
337     unmediated ǂb n ǂ2 rdamedia ǂ3 liner notes
ǂ0 Authority record control number or standard number

Record a control number or identifier in subfield ǂ0 that corresponds to the data in subfields ǂa, ǂb, and ǂ2. For more information about subfield ǂ0, see Control Subfields.

ǂ1 Real World Object URI

For information about subfield ǂ1, see Control Subfields.

ǂ2 Source

MARC code that identifies the source of the term or code used to record the content type information. See Genre/Form Code and Term Source Codes. Prefer use of code rdamedia rather than rdamt in WorldCat records. In the future, OCLC will provide the capability to output either code in association with a preferred subfield ǂ0 or subfield ǂ1.

337     video ǂb v ǂ2 rdamedia

If the term appearing in the field is from a translated version of the original source document or list, the code must be followed by the appropriate 3-character MARC language code from the MARC Code List for Languages. The language code is separated from the subfield ǂ2 code by a slash. The term in subfield ǂa and the language code in subfield ǂ2 should be consistent with the language coded in field 040 subfield ǂb. For information about subfield ǂ2, see Control Subfields.

ǂ3 Materials specified

For information about subfield ǂ3, see Control Subfields. Subfield ǂ3 should be placed at the end of field 337.

ǂ6 Linkage

Data that link fields when non-Latin script is entered. This subfield is system supplied and does not appear in OCLC online displays. Do not manually add subfield ǂ6. For more information about subfield ǂ6, see Control Subfields.

ǂ8 Field link and sequence number

For information about subfield ǂ8, see Control Subfields.

For records containing or omitting punctuation, follow these instructions:

  • Omit punctuation preceding each subfield
  • Omit the terminal period at the end of the field
