490  Series Statement (R)

Definition

A series statement for a series title, statement of responsibility, etc. Field 490 does not serve as a series access point. When field 490 is used and a series access point is appropriate, both the series statement in field 490 and a corresponding series access point in field 800, 810, 811, or 830 are recorded in the bibliographic record.

Guidelines

For unpublished and manuscript material, do not use field 490 since series statements do not apply. Record series-like phrases in field 500.

Series tracing policy. A value that specifies whether or not the series has a corresponding 800-830 series access point.

2nd Indicator

Undefined. The 2nd indicator position is undefined and contains a blank.

Punctuation

For records containing ISBD punctuation, follow these instructions:

• Optionally, follow an initial subfield ǂ3 by a colon-space or a space-colon-space if following an open date
• Precede ǂa beginning with a parallel series title by a space-equals-space
• Precede ǂa beginning with a subseries by a period-space
• Enclose the text in subfield ǂl in parentheses
• Precede subfield ǂx,ǂy, and ǂz by a comma-space
• Precede subfield ǂv by a space-semicolon-space
• Precede any parallel statement within a subfield by a space-equals-space
• Precede any unit of other title information within a subfield by a space-colon-space
• Precede a subseries designation within a subfield by a period-space
• Precede a subseries following a subseries designation within a subfield by a comma-space
• Precede a subseries not following a subseries designation within a subfield by a period-space
• Precede any statement of responsibility following title information within a subfield by a space-slash-space
• Precede any subsequent statement of responsibility subfield by a space-semicolon-space
• Enclose any text within brackets as required by cataloging instructions
• Include incidental punctuation needed within any subfields, e.g., commas, periods (following abbreviations or initials), etc.
• Omit parentheses enclosing the entire series statement
• Omit the terminal period at the end of the field unless the last word is an abbreviation or initial

For records containing minimal or no punctuation, follow these instructions:

• Include a space-equals-space as the first element in subfield ǂa beginning with a parallel series title
• Include brackets and punctuation needed within any subfields
• Otherwise, omit the punctuation outlined in the ISBD punctuation section above
