A note that provides general information for which a specialized note field (i.e., a specific 5xx field) has not been defined. Use for the following kinds of notes: |

- Physical description enhancements
- Program notes
- Series statements that cannot be accommodated in 4xx Fields
If you are cataloging rare and special collection materials, use field 500 for copy- or institution-specific notes having scholarly or artistic value beyond the local institution. See section 3.4.1, "Copy- or Institution-Specific Information," for more information. If the note is about other types of copy-specific and local notes, use field 590 or field 599. For guidance on describing and encoding the attributes of audio recording carriers, see “Supplement 1” of the Music Library Association’s Supplements to Best Practices for Music Cataloging Using RDA and MARC21. - Include incidental and ISBD punctuation needed within any subfields, e.g., commas, periods (following abbreviations or initials), etc.
- Optionally, add a terminal period at the end of the field (preceding subfield ǂ5) unless the last subfield ends with an ellipsis or period (following an abbreviation or initial)
