A note that provides general information for which a specialized note field (i.e., a specific 5xx field) has not been defined. Use for the following kinds of notes: |

- Bibliographic history
- Physical description enhancements
- Program notes
- Series statements that cannot be accommodated in 4xx Fields
If you are cataloging rare and special collection materials, use field 500 for copy- or institution-specific notes having scholarly or artistic value beyond the local institution. See section 3.4.1, "Copy- or Institution-Specific Information," for more information. If the note is about other types of copy-specific and local notes, use field 590 or field 599. - Optionally, add a terminal period at the end of the field (preceding subfield ǂ5) unless the last subfield ends with an ellipsis or period (following an abbreviation or initial)
