Definition |
A note indicating that more than one bibliographical work is contained in the physical item at the time of publication, release, issue, or execution. Use field 501 only when the physical item is not being described as a unit. The works that are contained in the item usually have distinctive titles and lack a collective title. Field 501 usually begins with the designation Issued with:, With:, etc. In current cataloging field 501 is used primarily for rare, historical, and other special materials. For information on punctuation, see the Punctuation section below. |

Guidelines |
In the cooperative bibliographic environment of WorldCat, use field 501 primarily to describe resources as they were originally published, released, issued, or executed. Generally, do not use field 501 with subfield ǂ5 in WorldCat records for resources bound together locally. Field 501 with subfield ǂ5 may be included in your locally edited copy of the bibliographic record. See section 3.4.1, "Copy- or Institution-Specific Information," for more information. Field 501 with subfield ǂ5 may also be created, maintained, and viewed as part of Local Bibliographic Data (LBD). See "Working with Local Bibliographic Data" for more information. In some cases, including the cataloging of rare and special collection materials and other pre-1801 resources, field 501 may be used to describe separate works that were bound together locally, in which case subfield ǂ5 contains a code that indicates the institution to which the note applies. Use field 501 with subfield ǂ5 only in cases where the local binding note has scholarly, research, or artistic value or interest beyond the local institution. For rare printed textual monographs receiving special treatment within a repository, see Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Books) 7B18, 7B19, and/or other relevant instructions. For rare printed textual serials receiving special treatment within a repository, see Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Serials) 7B7.8, 7B22, and/or other relevant instructions.
For sound recordings, when the works of different composers are issued on the same sound recording, a separate record may be created for each of them, each containing a With: note. This was standard practice under AACR1 Rule 252F11. AACR2 6.1G allowed this practice but the corresponding LCRIs said to describe the item as a unit. Although the practice is possible under RDA 1.5 and its LC-PCC PSs in certain circumstances, a comprehensive description is generally preferred.
For motion pictures, video recordings, and filmstrips, the note indicates that two or more distinct titles are presented on the same reel or strip or contained in the same cassette or disc, etc. For archival moving image materials receiving special treatment within a repository, see Archival Moving Image Materials, 2nd edition, 7B31 and/or other relevant instructions.
For cartographic materials, this field may be used when the title and statement of responsibility area contains a title that applies to only part of an item that lacks a collective title. When more than one bibliographic record is created, field 501 contains a note listing the other separately titled works in the item in the order they appear. See Cartographic Materials, Second edition, 7B21 and/or other relevant instructions.
For original or historical projectable graphic material and for opaque graphic material, this field contains notes on the other image or part when one is cataloging as separate records two or more separately titled images on a single support or parts either bound together or in one container. For graphic materials, including still images of all types, such as prints, drawings, photographs, posters, postcards, pictorial advertisements, cartoons, comic strips, portraits, landscapes, book illustrations, born-digital pictures, etc., receiving special treatment within a repository, see Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Graphics) 7B17 and/or other relevant instructions.

ǂ5 Institution to which field applies | For information about subfield ǂ5, see Control Subfields. When applying RDA and referencing related items issued independently that have subsequently been bound together, follow LC-PCC PS 28.1.1.3 and add ǂ5. Generally, do not use field 501 with subfield ǂ5 in WorldCat records for resources bound together locally. See Guidelines above.
