533  Reproduction Note (R)

Definition

A note that describes a resource that is a reproduction of an original material. Describe the original resource in the main portion of the bibliographic record and data relevant to the reproduction as a note in field 533 when the data differs from the information describing the original. Use whenever you choose to have the description reflect the original and the note reflect information about the copy. In MARC 21, field 533 subfield ǂ7 is defined as fifteen character positions that contain coded information pertaining to the reproduction. OCLC implemented field 539 in place of field 533 subfield ǂ7. Each 539 field must follow its associated field 533.

Guidelines

Use field 533 for information describing a copy of a record unit when the agency describing the materials possesses only a copy and, in accordance with conventions, the original is described in the main portion of the control record. Use field 533 in conjunction with field 535 which indicates the repository holding the original.

Use field 533 for information describing a remotely accessed electronic reproduction of a work previously published in printed form, including electronic books, as outlined in Library of Congress Rule Interpretation 1.11A. Apply this practice only when the reproduction manifestation is represented by its own bibliographic record, separate from any record for the original print version. Creating separate records for a resource is preferable when both remote and directly tangible (non-remote) versions exist. When cataloging digital versions of print materials, generally create separate records for the digital version of a resource. Undefined. The 1st indicator position is undefined and contains a blank.

2nd Indicator

Undefined. The 2nd indicator position is undefined and contains a blank.

Subfields

For continuing resources, enter the number of microfiches, microfilm reels, etc., only when the microform set is complete.

Punctuation

For records containing ISBD punctuation, follow these instructions:

• Optionally, follow an initial subfield ǂ3 by a colon-space or a space-colon-space if following an open date
• Precede second and subsequent occurrences of subfield ǂb by a space-semicolon-space
• Precede each occurrence of subfield ǂc by a space-colon-space
• Precede each occurrence of subfield ǂd by a comma-space
• Precede subfield ǂe by a period-space unless following an open date
• Precede each occurrence of subfields ǂf, ǂm, and ǂn by a period-space
• Enclose the entire series statement in subfield ǂf in parentheses
• Enclose any text within brackets as required by cataloging instructions
• Include incidental and ISBD punctuation needed within any subfields, e.g., commas, periods (following abbreviations or initials), etc.
• Optionally, add a terminal period at the end of the field (preceding subfield ǂ5) unless the last subfield ends with an ellipsis, exclamation point, hyphen, period (following an abbreviation or initial), or question mark

For records containing non-ISBD punctuation, see the cataloging instructions used to create the record.

For records containing minimal or no punctuation, include brackets and ISBD and incidental punctuation needed within any subfields. Otherwise, omit the punctuation outlined above.
