Definition

A note about the immediate source of acquisition. Use primarily for original or historical items or other archival collections.

Repeat field 541 for notes about the acquisitions of additional material in a collection. Use a separate 541 for each acquisition.

Use field 561 for notes about the original source of acquisition.

Privacy. Specifies whether the contents of the field are private or not.

2nd Indicator

Undefined. The 2nd indicator position is undefined and contains a blank.

Punctuation

For records containing punctuation, follow these instructions:

• Optionally, follow an initial subfield ǂ3 by a colon-space or a space-colon-space if following an open date
• Precede subfields ǂa, ǂb, ǂc, ǂd, ǂe, ǂf, ǂh, and ǂn by a semicolon-space unless preceded by subfield ǂ3
• Include incidental punctuation needed within any subfields, e.g., commas, periods (following abbreviations or initials), etc.
• Omit punctuation preceding subfield ǂo following subfield ǂn
• Optionally, add a terminal period at the end of the field (preceding subfield ǂ5) unless the last subfield ends with an ellipsis or period (following an abbreviation or initial)

For records containing minimal or no punctuation, include incidental punctuation needed within any subfields. Otherwise, omit the punctuation outlined above.
