Definition

A note about the documentation of the described materials, such as code books that explain the contents and use of the file or a user's manual.

Use field 581 if the note is about the analysis, study, or use of the file.

Display constant controller. A value that controls the generation of the display constant preceding the note.

2nd Indicator

Undefined. The 2nd indicator position is undefined and contains a blank.

For records containing punctuation, follow these instructions:

• Omit punctuation preceding each subfield unless the preceding subfield ends with an ellipsis, exclamation point, hyphen, period (following an abbreviation or initial), question mark, closing bracket, or closing parenthesis
• Include incidental and ISBD punctuation needed within any subfields, e.g., commas, periods (following abbreviations or initials), etc.
• Optionally, add a terminal period at the end of the field unless the last subfield ends with an ellipsis or period (following an abbreviation or initial)

For records containing minimal or no punctuation, include incidental and ISBD punctuation needed within any subfields. Otherwise, omit the punctuation outlined above.
