A note about the content and characteristics of case files. Case files are records with standard categories of information about a defined population. Case files may be individual documents that have information about a single unit of analysis. They also may reflect aggregate data (e.g., machine-readable records) that can be used and electronically subdivided into individual case documents. ǂc Unit of analysis | The subject to which the variables in the case file or database refers (e.g., casualties in emergency rooms, convicts in correctional files, or workers in personnel records).

ǂd Universe of data | The scope of the data collection effort and the specifications of the sample represented.

ǂe Filing scheme or code | A code that places the described materials in the context of a scheme of intellectual arrangement. The arrangement can be one that is assigned either by the creator, custodian, or office of origin.
