Definition

Subject added entry in which the entry element is a named event.

Named events are those that cannot be regarded as responsible agents, e.g., battles, earthquakes, famines, financial crises, fires, hurricanes, riots, strikes, volcanic eruptions, wars, etc.

Named events that can be regarded as responsible agents such as meetings or conferences as well as athletic contests, competitions, expeditions, expositions, fairs, festivals, sports events, tournaments, etc., are recorded in field 611.

Subject added entries are assigned to a bibliographic record to provide access according to generally accepted thesaurus-building rules (e.g., Faceted Application of Subject Terminology (FAST)). Field 647 may be used by any institution assigning subject headings based on the lists and authority files identified in the 2nd indicator position or in subfield ǂ2.

For information about FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology) subject access points, see 6xx Introduction.

1st Indicator

Undefined. The 1st indicator position is undefined and contains a blank.

2nd Indicator

Note: Prefer use of 2nd indicator values 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, or 6 when 2nd indicator value 7 with codes lcsh, cyac (formerly lcac), mesh, nal, cash, or rvm in subfield ǂ2 would convey the same information. Prefer use of 2nd indicator value 4 instead of value 7 and subfield ǂ2 local.
