938  Vendor-Specific Ordering Data (R)

Definition

Vendor-specific ordering data. OCLC loads the vendor records into WorldCat.

If an incoming vendor record matches an existing WorldCat record, OCLC adds the 938 field to the WorldCat record. If there is no match, OCLC adds a record to WorldCat. In either case, OCLC sets the vendor's holdings and retains field 938 in the WorldCat record. You cannot add, change, or delete a 938 field in a WorldCat record, but you can add, change, or delete a 938 field in your local copy of the record. The locally edited field is visible in the displayed record only during the session in which it was modified.

Punctuation

For records containing or omitting punctuation, follow these instructions:

• Include incidental punctuation needed within any subfields, e.g., commas, periods (following abbreviations or initials), etc.
• Omit punctuation preceding each subfield unless the preceding subfield ends with an ellipsis, exclamation point, hyphen, period (following an abbreviation or initial), question mark, closing bracket, or closing parenthesis
• Omit the terminal period at the end of the field unless the last word is an abbreviation or initial
