How to contribute to OAIster
OAIster harvesting happens through the WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway. The WorldCat Gateway is a Web-based tool that enables organizations to upload the metadata of their digital content to OAIster and WorldCat. Offering more control over the metadata harvesting process, the WorldCat Gateway allows you to customize how your metadata displays in WorldCat.org and determine your own metadata harvesting schedule—monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually.
The WorldCat Gateway is compatible with all OAI-compliant repositories and is available at no charge.
- Repository managers with OAI-compliant repositories can begin uploading their metadata to OAIster and WorldCat by visiting the WorldCat Gateway site and following the steps at Getting Started with the WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway.
- CONTENTdm users should follow the steps outlined in the CONTENTdm Community Center (login required), which has information specific to CONTENTdm.
If you have any questions about contributing your metadata, please contact us.

History of OAIster
OAIster began at the University of Michigan in 2002 funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Its purpose was to establish a retrieval service for publicly available digital library resources provided by the research library community. During its curation at the University of Michigan, OAIster grew to become one of the world’s largest aggregations of records pointing to open access collections.
In 2009, OCLC formed a partnership with the University of Michigan to provide continued access to open access collections aggregated in OAIster. Since OCLC began managing OAIster, it has grown to include more than 50 million records contributed by 2,000+ organizations. OCLC has evolved OAIster to a model of self-service contribution for all open access digital repositories to ensure the long-term sustainability of this rich collection of open access materials.
