El Massachusetts Library System (MLS) es una colaboración que brinda el estado para fomentar las relaciones con 1600 bibliotecas diversas en todo Massachusetts. Uno de los servicios que el MLS ofrece a estas bibliotecas es el préstamo interbibliotecario (ILL), pero a veces puede ser difícil encontrar el material exacto que se necesita. “Entre todas las diversas herramientas de OCLC que existen, FirstSearch® es la mejor manera de encontrar exactamente lo que se está buscando”, dijo Sue Kaler, ex gerente de ILL para el MLS y sus organizaciones antecesoras. “Muchas de nuestras bibliotecas tienen su propio inicio de sesión en FirstSearch”, explicó Sue, lo que demuestra que es muy fácil para ellos solicitar productos a través del MLS. “Hay un pequeño ícono de ILL en la parte superior de su página. Hacen clic sobre ese ícono y presionan enviar”, dijo. Las solicitudes de ILL enviadas a través de FirstSearch contienen información precisa de la base de datos de WorldCat, permitiéndole ahorrar tiempo al personal de las bibliotecas prestadoras.

Jean Williams, Bibliotecaria de referencia en Cary Memorial Library, en Lexington, Massachusetts, dijo que en su biblioteca: “muchas de nuestras solicitudes de préstamos interbibliotecarios comienzan como preguntas de referencia. Mantenemos FirstSearch marcado como favorito en nuestro escritorio de referencia”. En Cary Memorial Library, el personal de algunas áreas depende de FirstSearch. “Una de estas personas es nuestro catalogador, porque para su trabajo es esencial poder hacer coincidir el mejor registro de catálogo con la mayor cantidad de información”, dijo Jean. Sue y Jean han utilizado FirstSearch durante muchos años y les ha ayudado a encontrar muchos recursos excepcionales. Jean recordó una solicitud de un material exclusivo. Durante la era de la radio de onda corta, "cuando las personas podían captar las transmisiones de los demás, tenían su propio sello personalizado y podían enviarlas por medio de operadores de radioafición. Estos sellos de radio se han recopilado en álbumes, y había una biblioteca que sorprendentemente tenía uno y estaba dispuesto a compartirlo”, dijo Jean.

Sin FirstSearch, Sue dijo: “Tendrías que trabajar aún más para distinguir el material que es útil para los propósitos del préstamo interbibliotecario. Sería posible, pero habría mucha confusión". Ella continuó: "No queremos que haya confusiones. Queremos ser eficientes". En un sistema de préstamo interbibliotecario tan grande, la eficacia que FirstSearch proporciona es la clave. “Creo que FirstSearch es uno de los mejores productos de OCLC, dijo”, “y estoy muy contenta de que todavía esté con nosotros”.
