"In het eerste jaar zagen we een toename in het aantal downloads van volledige artikelen van 25%, 23% voor digitale tijdschriften en 25% in het aantal geleende boeken. Er werden 11% minder artikelen geleend, doordat deze nu volledig konden worden gedownload."

Zoals zovele instellingen werkten de medewerkers van de Busse Library van Mount Mercy University met (meer dan 15 jaar oude!) software voor bibliotheekbeheer. Doordat de software zo verouderd was, moesten de medewerkers veel alternatieve handelingen uitvoeren. Bovendien moesten de bibliotheekgebruikers e-resources zien terug te vinden op een verwarrende set online sites en services die niet makkelijker doorzoekbaar waren. De studenten en docenten konden dus niet makkelijk de gewenste volledige artikelen vinden in de 25 elektronische databases van de bibliotheek. Hoe zorgvuldig de bibliotheekmedewerkers ook met hun tijd en budget omgingen, met een dergelijk verouderd en inefficiënt systeem was dat verloren moeite.

Marilyn Murphy, directeur bibliotheekdiensten: "We hadden de middelen niet om een nieuw systeem te beheren en we wilden geen nieuwe server kopen. We wilden een gehost of gedeeld systeem, zodat we binnen ons budget konden blijven. Maar we wilden vooral een oplossing die ons zou helpen de dienstverlening aan onze studenten te verbeteren."

"Nu onze elektronische holdings in de WorldCat knowledge base staan, worden de studenten via 'Online weergave'-links van de zoekresultataten direct doorgeleid naar de volledige artikelen. Bovendien ziet onze bibliotheekcatalogus er nieuw uit en is deze voorzien van omslagfoto's, recensies van andere gebruikers, redactionele recensies en links naar verwante onderwerpen. Veel moderner en zoals onze studenten het tegenwoordig gewend zijn."

Na de eerste 15 maanden van gebruik, meldde Marilyn dat de resultaten met WorldShare® Management Services een doorslaand succes waren: er waren 25% meer volledige artikelen gedownload. De studenten kunnen nu met één zoekopdracht in alle databases naar artikelen en elektronisch bronnenmateriaal als Google Books, Internet Archive, HathiTrust, etc. zoeken.

"De studenten vinden nu meer bronnenmateriaal en maken beter gebruik van onze bestaande databases," vertelt Marilyn. "Bovendien houden onze medewerkers tijd over omdat we geen tijd meer besteden aan systeembeheer. We doen geen dubbel werk meer door holdings in zowel de lokale catalogus als WorldCat® te zetten. Als we dat nu één keer doen, dan zijn we klaar. En we besparen in vergelijking met ons oude systeem tijd met de incheckfuncties voor seriële uitgaven in WorldShare Management Services."

Maar waar ze het meest blij mee is? Met de tijd die ze nu overhielden hebben ze hun volledige collectie geïnventariseerd, verouderde records verwijderd (wat nu de helft minder tijd kostte als voorheen) en LibGuides kunnen aanmaken voor alle klassen in hun universitaire leersysteem. "Dankzij de gestroomlijnde werkprocessen van WorldShare Management Services en omdat het in de cloud werkt, hebben we nu de tijd en flexibiliteit om de dienstverlening aan onze studenten te verbeteren, ongeacht waar we zijn."
