Description

Libraries are increasingly comfortable lending legacy formats such as a/v, microforms, or bound serials through interlibrary loan. However, sharing of special collections materials via ILL remains a challenge for many, due to concerns about the safety of the material, workflow, approval processes, and other issues.

The SHARES Sharing Special Collections Working Group was formed in September 2018 to explore the interlending of materials from special collections among members of the SHARES resource sharing consortium. In keeping with the SHARES philosophy of liberal lending policies and supporting a collaborative environment among partner libraries, the working group’s goals are:

  • To gather information on the current state of sharing special collections through interlibrary loan across SHARES;
  • To promote the sharing of special collections materials between SHARES libraries through interlibrary loan; and
  • To create common expectations among SHARES libraries when borrowing or lending special collections materials.

Working group members discuss the results of a recent SHARES-wide survey on current special collections lending practices and provide an update on the development of a framework of protocols that will serve as the basis for special collections sharing via ILL among SHARES libraries.

This webinar will be of interest to those working in special collections and resource sharing, as well as those thinking about the future of collections and how to improve services to patrons.

  Works in Progress: An OCLC Research Occasional Webinar Series

These webinars are exclusively for OCLC Research Library Partners, but the recordings are publicly available to all.

Works in Progress: An OCLC Research Occasional Webinar Series to talk about work happening in OCLC Research – we'd like to present our work informally and get feedback from you, our Partners. We'd also like this to be a venue for Partner institutions. What are you working on that everyone should know about? What input would help you move forward? Let us know!
